This week sees the first ever Small Business Saturday in the UK, a campaign to get shoppers supporting smaller local companies.

Concept Cupboard creatives rock 10 Downing Street

It’s not everyday you get invited to 10 Downing Street, but yesterday that is exactly what happened. Not only did I get an invite, but two Concept Cupboard creatives (Tim & Sam pictured below) were also there to showcase a video they had produced.

It was all part of the StartUp Britain campaign. The founding partners were presenting a review of the recent “Marketing 4 StartUp Britain” week and also invited their founding sponsors (& yours truly) to discuss some key initiatives they have planned for the coming months. I can’t tell you much about that at the moment, but needless to say the StartUp Britain team are working tirelessly to get huge initiatives off the ground as soon as possible.

There were a few things that struck me during the meeting.

1. The team from Number 10, including Steve Hilton (Senior Adviser to the Prime Minister), really are working their backsides off trying to make things happen. They do get what small businesses are all about and they are working on initiatives to fix them. It wasn’t just talk they actually had actions in place to fix problems that were being flagged.

2. The StartUp Britain team are relentlessly trying to push themselves and create bigger and better programmes to help UK businesses. It was great to hear Emma Jones, Oli Barrett, Michael Hayman and co. laying down their thoughts on how they can make StartUp Britain even more successful.

3. I really couldn’t believe that just 5 months after launch Concept Cupboard had been invited to a meeting with senior political and corporate figures to chat about the future of small business.

But the highlight of the evening came when Tim & Sam were asked to show the video they had produced. Everyone in the room was mightily impressed, but I also think a little bit surprised that two young lads could produce something so polished & engaging. It was a great advert for Concept Cupboard, the guys themselves & also all of the creatives graduating from UK universities. Fingers crossed it leads to projects from those companies.
