Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work

Guest post written by Iona at Mercer Design.

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way
to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the
only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found
it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart,
you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it
just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking
until you find it. Don’t settle.
Steve Jobs

I read this quote by the late Steve Jobs the other day, and felt blessed that I had found a career path which makes me happy. But did I always know I wanted to be a designer… eeer no!

I went through a succession of ideas from childhood to university…
these included being a nurse, doctor, marine biologist, film maker, actress, photographer… and the list goes on!

When it came to crunch time for university though, I still didn’t know what I wanted to do as a career but my mum offered some great advice. She said do what you think you will love, because even if you don’t end with a career at least you will have enjoyed the next 3 years not wasted them. I took this on board and followed my heart into design, not knowing where it would take me or even if it was the career I wanted.

This was a really good decision as by the end of the first year I knew design was the right career for me. I still have many other hobbies which interest me and I did work as an underwater videographer and travel writer in between design jobs too, but I know this is what I love the most.

I guess being a designer is exciting to me, no two days are the same. In the same way an actor or actress researches a role and may feel like they get the chance to work as different people; a designer gets to do the same. For each new client you must research the company and understand their business in order to create effective design. This can make you feel you have a career in several fields as you immerse yourself in different brands for different projects.

I think it is important to love what you do, and like Steve said ‘if you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle’. It may be very tough to find jobs at the moment, and you may have to do some where your heart is not in it… but don’t give up finding the career for you, it will benefit everyone as Aristotle puts it: ‘Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work.’
