Award ahoy, but it’s just the start…

Future 50

Exciting news here at Concept Cupboard. We’ve made it as one of the winners of the Red Bull Future 50. For those unaware of what this represents, it is a list of 50 of Britain’s most innovative, creative and disruptive young companies.

We feel very privileged to have received this accolade along with 49 other very innovative and inspirational companies. This is only spurring us on towards even greater endeavours and to create an even better service for all of you out there.

Whilst it is great to have this badge of honour it is however, not the end of it. We need your help in securing as many votes as possible in the Future 50 People’s Choice award to become the public’s most loved start up! Voting opens on Monday October 3, 2011 at 9am so have your web browsers at the ready!

Awards and Rewards…

We’ve had a hectic but interesting week here at Concept Cupboard. With plenty going on in the offices, we still managed to squeeze in time to attend the Smarta 100 awards and also to support the StartUp Britain bus tour. Here are the highlights.

Smarta 100 Awards

In the last few weeks we’ve been canvassing votes for Concept Cupboard in the Smarta 100 – a list of the most innovative and disruptive businesses in the UK. Hopefully you heard our call for help (and voted for us!) as we were placed up against some very strong competition.

After the public vote had closed we headed off last Wednesday to the awards night to find out where we’d come in the list. It was great to meet and network with so many amazing entrepreneurs on the night and it really did showcase some of the great talent that is out there.

We were absolutely delighted to find that thanks to your votes we’ve been voted 18th in the list. This is superb for a company only 7 months old.

We wouldn’t have been able to accomplish this great achievement however without all of your support and votes, so a big thank-you to all of you from the Concept Cupboard team.

StartUp Britain

The following morning, tired and nursing sore heads, we were bound for Sheffield to provide support on the StartUp Britain bus tour.  We were making an appearance to provide marketing advice and help to would-be entrepreneurs and small businesses. The overall tour consisted of 14 stops all over the country bringing together a whole host of various business experts, mentors, and already established companies such as Concept Cupboard!

We jumped on board for the Sheffield leg of the journey which was also host to the local MADE festival – an event dedicated to all things ‘entrepreneurial’ and featuring speakers like Peter Jones and Vince Cable.

Being able to participate in the StartUp Britain bus tour was really rewarding and hopefully we managed to help some entrepreneurs on their way in enterprise.

We also managed to make time to catch the first half of the TEDxSheffield event. Being big fans of TED talks here at Concept Cupboard it was a great opportunity actually to be in the audience for these world renowned events. The highlight was a talk from Lee Strafford, ex-CEO of PlusNet, who had some very important messages for businesses in the UK.

His point was that the UK is a one of the leading countries in the world at developing talented innovators but that often this skill-base doesn’t make it into UK companies. Instead it is head-hunted into other global corporates. UK business need to nuture the talent we have in order to create companies on the scale of the likes of Google. Something we whole-heartedly agree with here at Concept Cupboard!

Whilst there isn’t a recording of the event here’s one of our favourite TED Talks.

New O2 store with dedicated workspace for business

A new O2 Store has opened on Tottenham Court Road, complete with a walk-in workspace for 75 people. It’s an awesome idea & shows how committed O2 is to its business customers. We’ve posted in the past about innovative new work spaces like Central Working & Co-Work and it is great to see another option pop up for startups to take advantage of.

The new store, located at 229 Tottenham Court Road, is a split level store. The ground level has all of the latest devices on display comfy consultation areas and an express till. The Workshop – at basement level – offers drop-in and bookable work spaces for up to 75 people and three O2 Gurus on hand offering free help and advice.

Here’s the full list on what is on offer:

  • Open Work Stations for up to 10 people with access to power and wireless printers
  • Customer Lounge with soft seating, tablet devices for browsing and free hot and cold refreshments
  • 4 x Semi-Private Meeting Rooms each able to hold up to 4 people with access to LCD screens for presentations
  • Seminar Room for up to 30 people in lecture format, featuring interactive white boards for presentations and seminars
  • Private Conference Room with interactive white board facilities for up to 10 people
  • Concierge Bar for customer enquiries and booking workspaces
  • O2 Guru Bar for support and advice, complete with product showcase area
  • O2 Wifi which will be free and open for all customers

O2 Store

Meeting space

It is intended that the seminar room will play host to weekly events designed to support and encourage local entrepreneurs and small businesses, working in partnership with organisations such as Start-Up Britain and Enterprise Nation. Hopefully Concept Cupboard too at some point.

The space really does look incredible & it certainly makes choosing a telecoms provider for your business a whole lot easier. O2 have gone all out to add value to their business customers & even though this is just one store in London I am sure other stores are planned in the near future.

It is definitely worth a visit. Not only for the facilities, but the networking opportunities & events. To find out more go to O2 ‘s Business website.

Concept Cupboard’s newest recruit – Adam Ball

Concept Cupboard is growing and we’re delighted to introduce our newest recruit, Adam, who has joined us straight from university. Adam will be working with our web development & social media team on some really exciting projects we will be unveiling very soon.

It’s been a busy first week but he managed to find some time (in between moving into a new flat, working & socialising) to write a few words about his first week:

Adam Ball_Concept Cupboard

I recently graduated from the University of Birmingham where I studied Computer Science and Business Management. Having enjoyed my years as a student I can now happily say I am the newest Concept Cupboard recruit.

On seeing the chance to work for an exciting start up in the big smoke I knew I had to grasp the opportunity with both hands. I have joined the team as a Web Programmer and it’s going to be my task to try and bring you brand new features and developments on the site in the near future!

Now that I have arrived I can tell you that Concept Cupboard has some exciting projects in the pipeline and that you should most certainly watch this space.

It has only been a week since joining but I can already recommend working for a start up for two main reasons.

  • First is the exciting potential that you feel for the firm. Everything is up for grabs and the more you put into it the more you get out.
  • Secondly is the culture. It is one where your input is truly valued and you can see this directly reflected in the work that the company produces.

Looking forward to hearing from and working with you Concept Cupboard-ers in the near future!

Concept Cupboard make the Big Bus Challenge longlist

Last week we were invited to the British Transport museum for the Big Bus Challenge awards night. We were long listed from 650 entries from agencies all around the UK into the final 30. That’s right! Two of our students had their work shortlisted alongside established advertising agencies.

Sadly we didn’t make the final five, but it was an incredible achievement to make it as far as we did. A huge congratulations to Tim & Sam (the creatives behind the work).

You can find out more about the entries by checking out the big Bus Challenge website:

We need your votes for Smarta 100!

Vote for Concept Cupboard

We were thrilled to find out today that we have made it into the Smarta 100 – recognising the UK’s savviest, enterprising, most disruptive small businesses. But that is only half the story.

In order to walk away with the big prize we need your vote. In fact we need all of the votes we can get as we are up against some very well connected people. If you can spare 23 seconds to vote for us then please do.

If you can also spread the word and get your friends and family to vote for us too that would be even better.

Smarta 100

Why vote for us

- We are helping students & graduates find freelance work while they are studying or looking for full-time work. With graduate unemployment at a 15-year high concept Cupboard couldn’t be any more relevant.

- We are also helping businesses of all sizes grow their business through highly effective and affordable design & marketing.

- We are only 6 months old and winning an award like the Smarta 100 would help us get lots of exposure and put us on the map.

What will we do if we win

Any prize money will be pumped straight back into the business. We’ll be looking to improve the useer experience on our site, add extra helpful features and more. We’ll also be able to hire some additional staff to provide an even better service to our customers.

We may also buy a bottle of sparkly stuff to celebrate!

So if you do have time please vote for us and leave a comment. Every vote will count.
