We’re now 6 months old!

celebration

Wow. What a year it has been so far! We are now officially 6 months old and to be honest we’ve loved every minute of it. Well nearly. Setting up our merchant account was no fun at all.

It’s difficult to describe what we’ve achieved in this time so we thought we’d create a fun infographic instead. Click on the mini version below to view the full size image.

Also as it’s our first mini landmark we’ve taken a bit of time to reflect on the best bits from the last 6 months. There were quite a number to choose from but in no particular order, here they are:

Our first event was held at Fallon’s London office. It was an amazing evening where award-winning Creative Directors gave up their time to help creative arts students & graduates. One of the pieces of work created also got shortlisted for the Big Bus Challenge. // Find out more >

Being such a young company we didn’t expect to win any awards, but we have actually won two already and are shortlisted for two others. // Find out more >

First full-time placement

It doesn’t get much better than being able to place a graduate into their dream job at one of the world’s biggest gaming companies. But that’s exactly what we did. // Find out more >

We know we still have a lot of work to do, but the support from our creatives and the businesses working with us has been incredible. Long may it continue.

We especially want to thank a small group of people who have gone well out of their way for Concept Cupboard. You can check out who those people are by visiting our “thank you wall.”

Our big thankyou wall

So enough of us reflecting. We need to get back to work. Here’s to what will hopefully be another successful 6 months…

TED talks & why they are important for startups

ted-logo

Heard of TED talks?

If you haven’t then lucky you. You’re about to find out about a whole new place to go for inspiration, insight & some amazing anecdotes for your next business meeting or dinner party. If you have heard of TED talks before then skip to the bottom to check out our favourite TED talks (most of which are 3 minutes long or less).

TED talks are focused around Technology, Entertainment and Design. It’s quite a broad subject area but it means that they can invite some of the best, brightest and most interesting people from around the world to give a talk that they also film and add onto their website. Not every talk will be your cup of tea but you are able to filter through what appeals to you. If you only have 3 minutes then you can just search through talks that are 3 minutes or less.

Here are the main reasons that we think that TED is so important for startups, entrepreneurs and small businesses:

  • You can get access to really smart people for free (you can find out what MIT students are doing with mobile technology for instance).
  • It is amazing to see different people deliver their pitch. Watch and learn. It will help when presenting in front of your own clients.
  • It gets your brain going. You’ll have new ideas, think of solutions to problems, etc.
  • It’s a bit of light relief and a healthier stimulus than smoking.
  • It makes you appear super smart when you drop bits of a TED talk into conversation with clients or with friends at dinner parties.

As a small business time is precious and the need to get on with the to-do list will always be there, but if you can just watch one video a week you’ll notice a huge difference in the way you approach your day.

My first few weeks at EA Games by Craig Smith

EA Games

Hi there. I’m Craig Smith, and I was asked to write a short description of my first few weeks at EA Games in Guildford as I got the role via Concept Cupboard.

Firstly I should probably just mention that my current role is ‘Sims Asset Creator’. This involves me making promotional videos/parody video’s, screenshots for the game etc, all of which are made in the game. As a massive Sims fan, this is a fantastic job for me to have. I’ve been playing since I was about 11 way back on the original Sims and I would spend hours creating my own characters and the houses that they live in.

Every project is different, and throws up a new challenge all the time. As the shots are created using the in-game animation and so a strong knowledge of the game is very important as I have to know how characters will act, or react towards other Sims.

My first few weeks at EA have been amazing! Following E3 in the US, we were joined by a variety of games labels to discuss future releases within EA. This was great for me to go and see as not only did it allow me to meet a lot more people within the EA ‘family’, but I was also able to get up to speed with many aspects of the company. Later that day the whole office was taken up to London to go on the London Eye before having dinner – which again was an amazing experience and a great way to get to know more people.

The biggest thing I’ve noticed since starting at EA is just how nice the people and company is. Of course there is a lot of hard work involved but it makes it a lot easier when I am able to work in such a friendly environment where everyone is welcoming.

There are a lot of exciting projects coming up that I will be working on within The Sims 3 and I can’t wait for you all to see the finished pieces. I’ve just also got back from 2 weeks training in Asset Creation at EA’s office in San Francisco. The trip was an incredible experience.

Hopefully this has given you a little insight into my first few weeks week at EA and I can’t wait to see what the months ahead have in store.

Thanks for reading.
